Understanding the Instruments
Compass
The green triangle (▸) shows where the wind is coming FROM. "T" = True, "A" = Apparent. Tap the compass to switch between True and Apparent wind modes.
HDG - Heading. The direction the bow is pointing right now. The compass rotates so your heading is always at the top.
TWS - True Wind Speed. How fast the wind actually blows over the water, in knots. Independent of boat speed
TWA - True Wind Angle. The angle between the true wind direction and the bow. 0° means headwind, 180° means following wind. Negative = port tack, positive = starboard tack.
AWS - Apparent Wind Speed. The wind you actually feel on the boat
AWA - Apparent Wind Angle. The angle between where the wind appears to come from and the bow. Shifts forward compared to the true wind angle
STW - Speed Through Water. How fast the boat moves through the water (from the paddle wheel), not over the ground. Affected by currents.
SOG - Speed Over Ground. Your actual speed over the earth's surface from GPS. The difference between SOG and STW shows current effect.
COG - Course Over Ground. The direction you're actually travelling over the earth's surface (GPS). May differ from heading due to leeway or currents.
Depth - Water depth below the keel. Critical for avoiding groundings.
Gust - Peak wind speed measured in a short interval. When gust significantly exceeds TWS, expect sudden power changes.
⏱ Data updates every 60 seconds from the boat's instruments via SignalK. When moored, the update rate may be lower.
