Morning light on the horizon as we set off from Tresco Isles of Scilly to Arklow, Ireland. One and a half days and 174 nautical miles of pure champagne sailing. Two sunrises, two sunsets, and perfect down wind conditions let us hoist our symmetric spinnaker for the very first time in the middle of the Celtic Sea. We were quite often surrounded by a school of dolphins, even a baby one 🫶🏻🐬, and a pied fly catcher🐦⬛joined us for the night. Just spent a few blissful days on the Isles of Scilly - from an e‑bike tour around St Mary’s Island, soaking up the sandy beaches and wild nature, to sailing out to New Grimsby anchorage and visiting Tresco Island. The highlights? Stopping by Tresco Abbey Garden to admire the extraordinary plants 🪴 🌴 and the unique Valhalla ship figureheads - they’re a real eye‑catcher! We then set course for Bryher in our dinghy, where we savoured a lobster 🦞 farewell dinner whilst topping up our electric outboard (currents are very strong here 😅), strolled along the quiet island at dusk, and watched the sunset 🌅 from the deck of Lagertha ⛵️ before heading out early for a 39‑hour passage back to Arklow on the Irish coast. Had to dock at Penzance harbour for a few days because the wind was having a bit of a tantrum, but we turned it into a proper Cornwall getaway! 🌊 We were living aboard Lagertha, and the harbour was busy. Another Westerly Oceanlord was rafting right next to us - great company. 🚤 We pulled out our e‑bikes and spent a full sunny day exploring St Michael’s Mount castle, the garden, the low‑tide path, and a sunset dinner with views of the castle that left us speechless. 🌅 The next days we cycled down to Moushole for a coffee with cones, stopped in Newlyn for fresh crab bab and got a few Oysters for dinner. Also had a dinner @mackerelskyseafoodbar . Across the Irish Sea from Port Erin on the Isle of Man to Dún Laoghaire in Ireland. Not a huge amount of wind to play with, so it was a bit of a motor sail ⛵️Honestly, sometimes a little engine assistance is very welcome! The best bit? Right then, a bit of history and high seas today! 👋 We just had a wander around the Galeón Andalucía here in Douglas, Isle of Man, and wow, what a ship! Seriously impressive to see a full-sized replica of a 17th-century Spanish galleon right in the harbour. It’s a proper time capsule, and you can almost smell the spices and hear the stories of voyages past. We spent ages exploring the decks and imagining life as a sailor back then. Definitely not as glamorous as living aboard Lagertha, I can tell you! 😂 It’s a bit of a contrast seeing this alongside our trusty Westerly Oceanlord, but both are beautiful in their own way. The second leg of our trip crossing the Irish Sea heading towards the Isle of Man, good planing getting there! 🌊 Up to Holyhead motor sailing, the tides pushed is with a whooping 10 knot until we left the TSS. But once we left the TSS, the engine went off the wind picked up nicely at 70-80 degrees and maybe 15 knots or so?⛵️ Without the engine running its much more enjoyable. Cruising up with full sails out giving us a solid average of six knots towards Chicken Rock Lighthouse and the drinking dragon 🐉 at the southern tip of the IOM. When we turned northward, the wind just wasn’t strong enough for downwind sailing. Managed to scrape ourselves away from Pwllheli after two great months there - lovely place for a break! Lagertha got some serious rigging TLC sorted while we were docked: a brand new standing rigging, new chain plates and a few shiny upgrades 🙌🏻 including a stay sail furler and a new spray hood and cockpit enclosure is up too - the old one took quite a battering in 2024 December’s storm! Now heading back to the IOM with 20 knots of true wind on the nose barrelling through the Bardsey Sound 📍 off North Wales. Let me tell you, the waves weren’t cooperating much today - all over the place and definitely not showing their proper height in these videos! It felt a bit like being tossed around in a washing machine out there 🤪. After we got out of that churning section though - switched off the engine after getting the genoa up. Put the gearbox into reverse (classic Max-Prop fold task)... and then couldn’t seem to wrestle the gear lever back into neutral 🤯! Had to turn the prop shaft manually with my hands just to get it sorted, which was definitely a bit of an emergency moment 😐. Added ‚gearbox investigation‘ to our to-do list. Next up, while we’re at it - the genoa didn’t quite furl completely! Seems like there were a few missing turns on the drum after all that rigging work, especially when it’s rolled tight in stronger winds. Anyway, arrived at Porthdinllaen anchorage 😌 and it was a beautiful sunny evening - perfect for recovering from the sea, getting some extra turns on the genoa furler drum and planning our next leg back to the Isle of Man. ☀️ Couldn’t resist this gorgeous day while waiting for Lagertha’s rigging to be finished! And new Sprayhood+Cockpit enclosure 🛠️ But with the boat temporarily out of action, I needed an adventure! Luckily, the sun was shining, and I traded sails for wheels! 🚴♀️ I dug out my biker leather getup – feeling a bit rebellious and ready to roll! – and raced across the peninsula from Pwllheli to Nefyn, where we recently anchored. 💨 The countryside hills were calling! ⛰️ It was a fantastic ride – feeling like a modern-day pirate on two wheels! – with the scent of fresh cut grass in the air and breathtaking views around every corner. Porth Dinllean to St Tudwal's Island (Lunch stop) and finally to Pwllheli! Left the lovely anchorage at Porth Dinllaen and set course for Pwllheli, where Lagertha's getting new rigging. Although the sun was out, we saw nearly nothing, thick fog all the way. 😶🌫️🌞 Bardsey Sound was a proper test! Known for ripping tides, overfalls, and wild currents. Made even more exciting by near-zero visibility but luckily nearly no wind and a rather calm sea. The radar got a workout, and the boat turned sharply more than once as the very strong tidal streams took hold. Definitely kept us on our toes! 💨🌊 Our planning was right, we wouldn't like to be there in unfavourable conditions. Had to keep a sharp lookout for lobster pots, too. Hard to spot when you're sailing in a cloud. 🦞 Just before we arrived at St Tudwal's Island for our lunch stop, the fog cleared and the sun came out in full. Beautiful sunny day to anchor and breathe before timing the tide into Pwllheli Marina. ⛵ North Channel Crossing to Glenarm: A Lesson in Patience and Timing Good planning is everything when crossing the North Channel-wind and tide need to line up perfectly. We set off with a southerly wind, knowing it would turn westerly by the time we reached the tide running in our favor, from north to south. The sea state was rough at the start, with the tide and wind against us. But Lagertha, our trusty boat, handled the challenging conditions like a champ. We were tacking south with our stay sail, making little progress and fighting the tide. Then, just as we were about to complete a tack, we noticed we were still on the same heading. For a moment, we were confused-had something gone wrong? But no, it was the wind shift we'd been waiting for, arriving so abruptly that it took us by surprise. With the shift, we enjoyed a smooth 45°-60° sail down to Glenarm, this time with our genoa. The final stretch was a mixed bag of calm winds, squalls, heavy rain, and bursts of sunshine. ⛵ Ardfern to Port Ellen: Escaping the Gale "Prison" After days of hiding from stronger winds and gales in Ardfern, it started to feel like a prison. The constant battle of wind against tide was wearing us down. Today, the wind was lighter but still right on the nose and against the tide-at least we were spared the rain and had some sunshine! We decided to give our stay sail a try, thinking the gusts around 20 knots were ideal for testing. And wow, we're in love with it now! We set the autopilot to 30° on the wind, and Lagertha sailed like a dream. If only we'd tried it earlier on this trip 😅. Now, we're back to hiding from the next gale in Port Ellen, sipping on whisky and waiting for a good weather window to cross the North Channel to Ireland. If you're looking to train for heavy weather sailing, West Scotland in August is the place to be! We've only had a couple of nice days between all the strong winds and gales. ☀️ Yet Another "Summer" Day in West Scotland! Ah, summer in West Scotland-where the weather always keeps you guessing! We started with rough seas and squalls, battling winds up to 28 knots. Things finally eased up south of Easdale, where the wind dropped to 12 knots. As we navigated the tricky Sound of Luing and Dorus Mor, the wind played its usual tricks. And just when we needed it for downwind sailing up Loch Craignish, it vanished altogether. To add some excitement, we had none other than Princess Anne herself just behind us as we entered Loch Craignish. After all that, we treated ourselves to a delicious venison steak from the Kerrera farm shop. ⛵ Two Days in Oban and Kerrera Spent two days exploring Oban and Kerrera. We had a farewell dinner with our friends and buddy boat crew from Kutani @farr.a.way The next day, we took a water taxi to Oban, enjoyed a full Scottish breakfast, did some tourist shopping, and walked to McCaig's Tower & Battery Hill. We also visited the distillery before heading back to Lagertha for a posh dinner with local oysters and crab, topped off by a rainbow over Oban. ⛵ Journey from Loch na Droma Buidhe to Loch Aline 🌩️🌤️ Our day started early when a nearby boat dragged its anchor and drifted uncomfortably close. We spent the night in the cockpit from 1:30 am until 5:30 am, keeping an eye on things until they finally moved elsewhere. After a morning thunderstorm, we set off from Loch na Droma Buidhe, facing upwind gusts up to 30 knots. By evening, the weather turned in our favor, and we enjoyed a sunny downwind sail with full sails out. A massive dolphin sighting that lasted about 25 minutes as they played at our bow! We anchored in Droma Buidhe with our buddy sailors on SY Kutani @farr.a.way , enjoyed a BBQ, and had some delicious venison kebabs from Inverie. We were also hiding from strong winds in the anchorage, but the night wasn't restful-a nearby boat's anchor dragged, keeping us on watch in the cockpit until 5:30 am when they finally moved. 🌬️ Stormy Day at Anchor 🌊 While snuggled up in our bunks, the wind began to howl, reaching gusts over 30 knots. We stayed vigilant with our #vespercortex anchor watch system. To our starboard side, we had a massive 64m super yacht, and in front of us, a twin-masted French brigantine tall ship dragged its anchor, drifting close to our port side. How lucky we are! 🥰We did a day trip to Glasgow to get into the Gallery of Modern Art where the first Banksy exhibition of stencils from 1998-2023 is happening. "I've kept these stencils hidden away for years, mindful they could be used as evidence in a charge of criminal damage. Early start from Peel Bay to be at the entrance of Strangford Narrows at the right time to catch the last of the ingoing current. We did a whopping 12 knots over ground 🤪 Very calm sea but still spectacular eddies and whirlpools to see in the narrows while heading for Portaferry Marina. Bit of of a nerve-recking entry to the berth with the current pushing us all over the place in the wrong direction. Through the sandbanks and dangerous overfalls in 23 Kn of winds and about 3.5m waves 🌊 (well planned with the tides, though). Leg 3 Around the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 After a good breakfast we left Port St. Mary and headed to Douglas. The tide was in our favour and pushed us around Langness Point with about 3.5 Kn (6.5 through water 10 over ground). Arrived in Douglas bay under sail, it was just enough time to prepare some small nibbles for the Red Arrows aerobatics display. Then the wind was gone and we motored close to Laxey beach up to Maughold Head, where we were able to sail into Ramsey bay to a lovely evening on a buoy close to the Ramsey Pier.
